Run-Flat Tyres Explained: Are They Worth the Cost?

Run-flat tyres have become increasingly common on new vehicles from BMW, Mini and other manufacturers, and the concept is appealing — continue driving for a limited distance even after a complete loss of tyre pressure. But run-flat tyres also come with significant trade-offs that every driver should understand.

How Do Run-Flat Tyres Work?

Run-flat tyres use reinforced sidewalls — typically with a thick rubber insert — that support the vehicle's weight even when tyre pressure is zero. After a puncture, most run-flat tyres allow you to drive at up to 50mph for a maximum of 50 miles to reach a safe location or tyre fitting service. They eliminate the need to change a tyre at the roadside, which can be dangerous on busy roads.

Advantages of Run-Flat Tyres

The main advantage is obvious: you can continue driving after a puncture rather than stopping to change a wheel at the roadside. Many vehicles fitted with run-flat tyres don't come with a spare wheel, saving weight and boot space. Run-flat tyres also maintain more stable handling after a puncture compared to a standard tyre going flat, reducing the risk of losing control.

Disadvantages of Run-Flat Tyres

Run-flat tyres are significantly more expensive than standard tyres — sometimes two to three times the cost. They offer a firmer, less comfortable ride due to the stiff sidewalls, and they cannot typically be repaired after a puncture — they must be replaced. They also require a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) to be fitted to the vehicle, as the driver may not feel the loss of pressure.
